Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: Learning Through Worry Dolls
Taylor Butcher

Today in Mrs. Fay’s 3rd grade class, we spent time learning about Hispanic Heritage Month and why it’s important. We talked about how this month is a time to honor and celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of people whose families come from Spanish-speaking countries.

As part of our learning, we made worry dolls, which come from Guatemala. According to Guatemalan tradition, children tell their worries to these small dolls before placing them under their pillow at night. The belief is that the dolls will hold onto their worries so the child can sleep peacefully.

Our students loved creating their own worry dolls, and it was a meaningful way for them to learn about this tradition while also connecting it to conversations about feelings and what we can do when we feel worried! One student said, “I have all the worries, I can’t wait to tell my doll about them tonight!”

Three students hold the worry doll they made while standing in front of the projector.
