Fifth Graders Prepare Apple Crisps for a Schoolwide Sampling
Taylor Butcher

This week, Mrs. Han’s 5th grade class took part in a hands-on culinary learning experience led by TSC Nutrition. Students spent the afternoon in the school cafeteria preparing homemade apple crisps that will be offered as a special sampling to all students during lunch on Thursday, 12/11.

Wearing hair nets and working in teams, students learned how to measure ingredients accurately, follow a recipe, and prepare food in larger batches. The apples were locally sourced from Wea Creek Orchard, providing a chance to connect the project to local agriculture and the importance of fresh, community-grown produce.

During the activity, TSC Nutrition leaders and cafeteria staff helped students understand proper sanitation practices, reinforcing how cleanliness and safety play a vital role in food preparation. Students washed their hands, wore gloves and hair nets, handled ingredients responsibly, and followed the procedures necessary when cooking for others.

The cafeteria was filled with the warm aroma of apples and cinnamon as students measured, mixed, and assembled trays of crisp topping. The experience combined teamwork, real-world math skills, and culinary learning in a fun and meaningful way.
