MME 3rd Graders Learn Healthy Habits
Taylor Butcher

3rd Graders at Mayflower Mill Elementary School were visited over a span of 6 weeks by the Purdue Nutrition Program (CATCH program). Students took part in one, hands-on lesson each week that focused on a different wellness skill. Students learned about a variety of topics ranging from the sugar and salt content of food, to making sure they are drinking enough water each day. Students explored data about screen time and incorporating exercise into their daily routine.

In each lesson, Mrs. Martin (the Purdue CATCH program instructor), taught students about the healthy habit of the week. Students grew to look forward to a new type of exercise each day, a fun way to review old lessons from prior weeks, and- the best part according to most students- a fun, healthy snack!

The first couple of lessons focused on eating fruits. Mrs. Martin's motto for students is to "try something new!". Many students in 3rd grade tried fruits for the first time, such as pomegranate seeds or kiwi! Other weeks focused on vegetables, including a fan-favorite snack: veggie wraps! Students got to bring home a flyer to their families after each lesson about the daily wellness skill, and any recipe that they got to make that week in class. The CATCH program is a favorite of many third graders each year- and 3rd grade teachers!

"I love to see how students become more adventurous with trying new foods throughout the program. Even in the cafeteria, we start to see them get more excited about making healthy choices. It is so much fun to see their excitement. I look forward to Mrs. Martin's lessons each year!" -Mrs. Ehrman
