The Mill Connects to the Community Through Toilet Paper Rolls
Taylor Butcher

Youth Action Collective (YAC) helped the Student Council lead it's first project of the year!

Founder, Steph Rambo, presented to the club and taught them about community support and family shelters. Students learned about homelessness and the importance of shelters in communities. Learning how the Greater Lafayette Family Shelter provides various resources to its residents was inspiring! As families transition to homes of their own, they are gifted a care package that contains various household items to get started. The students were left with the sentiment to, "Leave things better than you found them." 4th grade Student Council representative, Tessa Hardenbrook, could be found using her newfound inspiration to leave the playground better than she found it as she picked up trash at the end of recess that week.

Over Fall Break, students were challenged to ask family and friends for toilet paper and paper towels to bring to school. Mayflower students from grades K-5 read books about shelter life and watched videos about homelessness from kids' perspectives. Student Council organized all the donations and counted them before YAC delivered them to the Greater Lafayette Family Shelter.

Thanks to some friendly competition and community-minded students, Mayflower was able to provide 959 rolls of toilet paper and paper towel to Lafayette families in need. The three leading classes were able to pie a teacher of their choice!

A giant pile of toilet paper and paper towels are lined up in a corner by a wall and cabinet.

3rd place, with 82 rolls, was Mrs. Ehrman's class.
2nd place with 100 rolls, was Mrs. Fay's class.
1st place with 165 rolls, was Mrs. Harshbarger's class.

Thank you to all Mayflower families and students who made this possible!
