WHIN grant to enhance computer science education

The TSC will purchase additional resources to strengthen computer science and digital learning initiatives thanks to a third grant from the Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN). This grant is part of a $6 million WHIN eLearning project, in partnership with North Central Health Services, to provide better connectivity and interactive learning for students on and off campus, as well as strengthen the region’s talent pipeline for the digital world.

The TSC will use some funds to purchase computer science curriculum to help elementary students learn keyboarding, as well as how to find, evaluate and use content using digital devices.  In addition, the grant will allow for the pilot of large interactive flat panel TVs in all kindergarten and first grade classrooms.

At the middle school level, the grant will support the purchase of 250 specialized laptops with the capability of running advanced graphics and engineering software needed in technology classes. In addition, 30 specialized laptops will be purchased for photography classes at Harrison High School. Those devices will enable students to use Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and other specialized programs.

TSC Technology Director Dr. Devin Arms says, “We are very excited about the programs and opportunities this latest round of grant funding will make available to students throughout the TSC. At the elementary level, investments in new software offerings will support learning in areas related to computer science and digital skills. The interactive, flat panel TVs are something that we’ve piloted for the last year with great success. Now we have the resources to expand this technology into primary classrooms where students will directly benefit from the interactive nature of the equipment.”

“The Tippecanoe School Corporation appreciates the continued partnership with WHIN,” says Arms. “We are thankful to partner with WHIN to deliver educational technology to the students in Tippecanoe County.”
